What I Learned Last Week in the MCU (7/12/2020-7/18/2020)

Giancarlo Esposito is poised to join the MCU in the near future – This has been rumored for some time now and while Esposito has not taken a role, he has made it clear he wants to play an “enduring” role in the MCU. Check out his far ranging interview with Entertainment Tonight here – https://bit.ly/2WxAOF1

An Eternals teaser trailer is likely coming soon – The first trailer for The Eternals was rated prior to the pandemic but due to The Eternals being pushed back to February 2021, we have yet to see any footage of the film. According to Amit Chaudhari(who has given accurate information in the past on trailer releases, most recently with a Black Widow trailer description and the trailer’s release less than a week later), we should have something coming for The Eternals in the coming weeks. Per his source, we may also be getting trailers or content for other Disney+ shows and people have began speculating that we may begin to see these trailers during the upcoming restart of sports in North America. Tom Holland says Spider-Man 3 should be done filming in February 2021 – Tom Holland has finally began filming for Uncharted but now we know when he will finish filming for Spider-Man 3. A user on r/MarvelStudios on Reddit, found a video on Tom Holland’s father’s Patreon where Tom, his brother and father are discussing Tom’s upcoming and incredibly busy schedule. He states that filming should be finished in February of 2021, which lines up with the target production date of September (this was the target back prior to the pandemic and even with the delays, it appears they will begin filming around this target date). Production could start as late as October and still allow the cast and crew enough time to have the film finished by February 2021, so the start of production on Spider-Man 3 is likely tied to the end of production for Uncharted. Hawkeye will be the first Disney+ show to feature multiple directors – The three Marvel Studio shows in production have all featured one director for the whole series but that will change with Hawkeye. Bert and Bertie (the directing duo of Amber Finlayson and Katie Ellwood) and Rhys Thomas have been tapped to direct blocks of episodes for Hawkeye. Source – https://bit.ly/3eLg2bg

WandaVision reportedly still set to release in December 2020 – All that can be said is “what a week” when it comes to WandaVision news. First, Deadline reported that despite the pandemic delays, we would be getting WandaVision in December of this year. Then THR reported that WandaVision was getting pushed back to its original release date of Spring 2021, only to turn around and retract that statement less than a day later. So as it sits right now, we should be getting Black Widow and WandaVision this with the likelihood we still get The Falcon and the Winter Soldier in 2020 as well. Source – https://bit.ly/2WCBXeK

The Falcon and the Winter Solider new release date likely to be announced soon – On Thursday, Disney released the new slate of August releases for Disney+ and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was inevitably missing from this list. A source close to the situation has confirmed the show has been delayed but ” If all goes well, a new premiere date will be announced soon”. While this gives us no clear timeframe on when the show will be released, the cast and crew only need to film for another nine days to complete filming for the show and are scheduled to do so in the fall. Barring any unexpected delays, we should likely see the release of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier in 2020. Source – https://bit.ly/3eHiZd1

What I Learned Last Week (During the Pandemic) in the MCU

Phase Four has been delayed – The biggest and most obvious news is that Phase Four of the MCU has been delayed. Set to kickoff on May 1st with the release of Black Widow, every MCU release has been pushed back at least six months and we still have no clarity on when unfinished projects will begin shooting again. Check out the new release dates below (only the movies, we still do not know how the Disney+ show release dates have been impacted).

Black Widow – November 6, 2020
The Eternals – February 12, 2021
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings – May 7, 2021
Spider-Man 3 – November 5, 2021
Thor: Love and Thunder – February 11, 2022
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness – March 25, 2022
Black Panther 2 – May 6, 2022
Captain Marvel 2 – July 29, 2022

Comic-Con 2020 no longer cancelled – Due to the pandemic, Comic-Con was cancelled for the first time since its inception but on May 8th, they announced they will be hosting a virtual at home Comic-Con. There is little information about how this event will occur but it is great to see that the event is still happening. (Source – https://bit.ly/2yywq01)

WandaVision is done shooting and the VFX may be completed as well – Much like The Falcon and the Winter Solider, it was thought that WandaVision still had filming left to complete but a new report from Murphy’s Multiverse disputes this. There was a pandemic storyline in The Falcon and the Winter Solider but due to the real world pandemic, this has been scrapped. It is thought that the required additional filming for WandaVision would have been tied to this plot but now these scenes are no longer needed. It its believed the VFX work is also completed for this show but that does not mean it is going to be released soon. WandaVision could still spoil other plot points from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and the show is meant to lead directly into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness which has been pushed back to March 25, 2022. (Source – https://bit.ly/35NkgfF)

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier still has two or three weeks left of shooting – In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sebastian Stan debunked rumors that the show only a week left to shoot, instead saying “No, we were probably two or three, but don’t quote me on that”. While we do not know when the Disney+ shows will be released, this news almost ensures we will not be seeing The Falcon and the Winter Soldier release during its target window of August. (Source – https://bit.ly/3duCJk2)

It is believe that the She-Hulk, Moon Knight, Hawkeye and Ms. Marvel scripts have all been completedShe-Hulk and Moon Knight have confirmation on completed scripts and while their is no official word, it is believed the scripts for Hawkeye and Ms. Marvel are completed as well as they are scheduled to shoot and release prior to She-Hulk and Moon Knight. (Sources – https://bit.ly/2YUqQzF https://bit.ly/3cmRdlE)

Secret Warriors, Ghost Rider, Ironheart, Secret Invasion/S.W.O.R.D and Nova are in development at Marvel Studios – There is little to no information on these properties outside of the confirmation they are in the works. Secret Invasion is certainly a show and will lead directly into Captain Marvel 2 and if I had to guess, Secret Warriors and Ironheart will receive Disney+ shows and Nova and Ghost Rider will be movies but again, there is no confirmation on that. Charlie Cox has said his version of Daredevil will not be in Spider-Man 3 – Charlie Cox recently had an interview with Comicbook.com and had this to say about his rumored role in Spider-Man 3 “I hadn’t heard those rumors, but it’s certainly not with my Daredevil. I’m not involved in it. If that is true, it’s not with me. It’s with another actor.” If you’ve followed me on Twitter for any length of time, you know that this was one of my favorite theories and while it is disappointing it will not be happening, this means we may have Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk as Peter’s lawyer (if this is even part of the storyline in Spider-Man 3) which is equally exciting. (Source – https://bit.ly/3dySciZ)

The script for Thor: Love and Thunder is complete and Chris Hemsworth says it’s the best he’s read in years – Chris Hemsworth was recently asked about Thor: Love and Thunder during promo for Extraction and had the following to say about the Love and Thunder script he read; “It’s one of the best scripts I’ve read in year. It’s Taika at his most extreme and his best. If the version I read is the one we get running with, it’s going to be pretty insane. Taika himself has described the movie as “It’s like 10 year olds Tolstoys us what should be in a movie and we said yes to every single thing” and coupling these comments with what we got in Thor: Ragnarok, I am beyond excited for this movie. (Source – https://bit.ly/35GzMdt)

Michael Douglas says we will get Ant-Man 3 news “soon” – During a Q&A on his Instagram, Michael Douglas was asked if he could share any info on Ant-Man 3. He was tight lipped and said he could not tell us anything but that we should be getting information “soon”. I personally think we will get some info at the virtual Comic-Con, as we are only a few months out from this event. (Source – https://bit.ly/2znukjw)\

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D final season will premiere on May 27th – The final season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D is set to air on ABC on May 27th. This season will wrap up the storylines began in season six and should give us answers on how the events of the show fit in the larger MCU (I personally think Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and the other Marvel TV shows are set on a different Earth, likely the 2014 timeline that Thanos left in Avengers: Endgame, but we will see soon). Check out the final season poster below.

Disney still has an untitled Marvel movie scheduled for 10/7/22 – Similar to Marvel Studios, Sony has shifted all of their future releases. Spider-Man 3 was moved from July 16, 2021 to November 5, 2021 and Into the Spider-Verse 2 was moved to October 7, 2022. Marvel Studios had an untitled movie set to be released on this date that many believed would be moved or abandoned but as of May 7, Disney has not moved the Untitled Marvel movie from this date.

RUMOR – Matt Murdock may be Peter Parker’s lawyer in Spider-Man 3

2021 is shaping up to be a big year for the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the releases of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love and Thunder and Spider-Man 3 all hitting the big screen. And when you have blockbuster titles, there are sure to be rumors and Kevin Smith has weighed in on one on the Fatman Beyond podcasts. See his comments below.

“I heard another piece of good f**kn’ news. Did You hear that Spider-Man, the new Spider-Man movie, gonna have a lawyer in it?”

His co-host, Marc Bernardin, then asked if he meant She-Hulk and Smith responded

Charlie Cox, they’re bringing in as Matt Murdock. That’s been the rumor online and they say that’s like the one that like Marvel’s like god damn it how did that get out?

So while this rumor has been making the rounds on social media for a while (I have been talking about this possibility since they cancelled the Netflix shows), it is interesting to see someone with such a large platform begin to discuss this rumor. We could possibly get some clarity in the coming weeks or months as Spider-Man 3 is gearing up to begin filming in Atlanta in July this year.

What I Learned Last Week in the MCU (2/23/20-2/29/20)

As a lot of you know, I follow MCU news very closely which is one of the ways I am able to piece my theories together. I know everyone doesn’t have the same time or resources to stay on top of all the current news, so these articles will be a weekly collection of the things that I learned the last week regarding the MCU. So here’s what I learned this week.

Disney+ Marvel Cinematic Universe Shows

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier cutting a plot point – Leaks (and the shows production company is Pandemic Productions LLC) suggested one of the main plot points during the first two episodes of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was a global pandemic instigated by a terrorist group. Over the past couple of weeks there have been relatively major reshoots for this show and it seems to be due to the fact Marvel Studios and Disney decided to drop this plot line from the show due to the current corona virus outbreak. (Source – http://bit.ly/32DFg78)

Battlestar believed to be appearing in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier – first reported by Charles Murphy back in November, new set phots seem to confirm that Battlestar will debut in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. In the comics, when the government replaced Steve Rogers as Captain America with John Walker, they introduced Lemar Hoskins as the new Bucky (eventually he would change his name to Battlestar). While we are not like to get a one to one adaptation of the comics, it does appear that Walker and Hoskins’ will have had a previous relationship (likely during their time in the military) and Walker has asked Hoskins to become his sidekick in the show. Check out the Sebastian Stan’s Instagram post below.

“Cap is Back” propaganda poster from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier – A new leak from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier gives us a glimpse at the propaganda the US government will us for John Walker as Captain America. Check out the image below.

Hawkeye is back on schedule (?) – whew, nailing Hawkeye and when it is going to go into production (therefore when it is going to air) has been tumultuous. When it was first announced, it was to be meant to be released in Fall of 2021 and while this date may or may not have changed (last week Hasbro’s release schedule appeared to confirm Ms. Marvel will air prior to Hawkeye), the show was originally eyeing to begin production in July of this year. Then a few months ago, production on Hawkeye was suspended indefinitely, only then to be announced, a matter of weeks later, that the show would be eyeing a September start date for production. Now it appears things are back on schedule for Hawkeye and the show will actually be filming in July (this is when Ms. Marvel is schedule to film, so we may have a similar situation to The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision’s production schedules). (Source – http://bit.ly/3conPvG)

New Loki character descriptions have surfaced – check out the list of supporting character descriptions below. It is believed the “Male Lead” has been cast as Owen Wilson although his role is still unknown. There is not confirmation if the other roles have been cast as of yet. (Source – http://bit.ly/2vsEXji)

Squadron Supreme rumored to be appearing in Loki – With he Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision both wrapping production soon, the next big show up os Loki. Earlier this week, one of the producers on the show was seen in a large comic book store, buying Squadron Supreme trade paperback. While this clearly is not confirmation, people involved in these projects can be good indicators of what to expect. The Squadron Supreme is generally described as Marvel’s version of the Justice League, so if Loki is going to show alternate Earths, it makes sense that the Squadron Supreme would be an alternate Earth’s equivalent to the Avengers. (Source – http://bit.ly/32D45Ac)

Moon Knight aiming to begin production in November – it was previously rumored that Moon Knight would be aiming for an August start date and would be shooting at the Pinewood Studios in the UK. New information now suggests that Moon Knight has been pushed to a November start date and will be filming in Pinewood Studios in Atlanta. A November start date fo0r production likely means the show will release December of 2021 or early 2022. (Source – http://bit.ly/2VBKhvG)

Marvel Studios looking for an “Alison Brie-type” for She-Hulk – earlier this week it was reported thatn Marvel Studios was looking for an “Alison Brie-type” actress for the titular role in She-Hulk. After the rumors, Brie was asked about the situation by James Corden and while she said she has spoken to anyone about the role, she does find the prospect of playing Jennifer Walters “interesting”. Check out the clip on YouTube below.

Marvel Cinematic Universe Movies

Tom Holland knows “everything” about Spider-Man 3 – In an interview with Hey U Guys on the red carpet of Onward, Tom Holland revealed that “he knows everything now” after having his pitch meeting with Marvel Studios and Sony about two weeks ago. Check out his comments below.

Wiz Kid set to appear in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings – Daniel Ritchman is reporting that Wiz Kid, a wheelchair bound mutant in the comics, is set to appear in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. While he says he does not know if Wiz Kid will be a mutant in the movie, Kevin Feige is taking clear steps towards introducing the mutants in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Final Black Widow trailer – Since the release of Avengers: Age of Ultron, every Marvel Cinematic Universe released in May has had a final trailer released in March; Avengers: Age of Ultron – March 4, 2015, Captain America: Civil War – March 10, 2016, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 – March 1, 2017, Avengers: Infinity War – March 16, 2018, Avengers: Endgame – March 14, 2019. So while there is no confirmed date, it is reasonable to expect the final Black Widow trailer to drop this month.

Sony Universe of Marvel Characters

Sony “had a really, really wonderful idea” to transition Spider-Man out of the MCU – in an promotional interview for Onward, Tom Holland was quoted “…future for Spider-Man was still very bright with Sony and we had a really, really wonderful idea how we could sort of transition into a Spider-Man without the MCU and Tom Rothman and Amy Pascal were really confidant that they were gonna do justice and make a film of the calibre that Spider-Man requires.” While he doesn’t get into specifics, it is nice to know he felt the transition out of the MCU would have been handled gracefully. Check out the interview below.
